Rules of Engagement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Rules of Engagement - Essay Example ROE can be explicit or general. Since they were created, ROE have had huge varieties between different wars. It ought to be noticed that ROE might be gotten from national or local law so as to be applied in a specific activity. It is intended to guarantee triumph through restrained and proper utilization of power (Collins, 2005). This paper will look to correspond the comprehension of ROE with the constrained war belief system and its suppositions as they are seen through the encounters and viewpoint of the six levels in the Vietnam War: singular troopers in the field; contingent officers; division leaders; General William Westmoreland; Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara; and President Lyndon Johnson. In the Vietnam War, President Lyndon Johnson settled on a choice of not assembling the National gatekeepers since he felt that doing so may flag wrong expectations to the Chinese and Soviets, prompting direct mediation into the war (Moss, 2010). The then Secretary of Defense Robert Mc Namara prescribed to President Johnson on July 20, 1965, that he ought to assemble around 235,000 National saves and watches. In any case, the President felt that the war in Vietnam would end inside one year and that the fighters would be should have been associated with a war in Korea on the off chance that it emits once more (Dorschel, 2011). It came to develop later that the United States fizzled in light of the fact that it disparaged the size of the difficulties in the war. Likewise, it fizzled in light of the fact that it upheld undemocratic and disliked government and neglected to pick up the endorsement of the individuals of America (Schulzinger, 1998). In direct relationship of ROE to the war, it happened that the positions of the National Guards expand simultaneously as the disdain of the dynamic armed force. The dynamic armed force began to see the Guards as dodgers. The period after the Vietnam War saw the start of the Total Force Policy time which saw the dynamic armed force rewarding the National Guards with apathy and predisposition (Moss, 2010). What turned out to be clear was that the Guard infantry warriors had the option to meet people's high expectations as required by ROE and finished their missions effectively (Logevall, 1999). ROE necessitates that the work of National Guard battle units ought to be finished by the warrior soldiers for arranging and mentioning their cooperation in the crusade. The National Guard is the Armyââ¬â¢s hold power. They are prepared and are consistently prepared for arrangement to zones of tasks and can likewise expect the withdrawing dynamic unitsââ¬â¢ job. The Active Army is comprised of 33 battle spans (Moss, 2010). In the Vietnam War, General William Westmoreland directed the United Statesââ¬â¢ military activities during its range from 1964 to 1968 (Dorschel, 2011). Later on, he filled in as the Chief of Staff of the Army. In agreement to ROE, General Westmoreland communicated positive thinking in his open proclamations with respect to the war; he revealed that American ground and aviation based armed forces were wearing out the Army of the North Vietnam (Schulzinger, 1998). It ought to be brought up that ROE relates belief system with universal or forceful activities. It is against this foundation that the American international strategy during the war was planned for pushing the Americanââ¬â¢s crucial, especially protecting its security advantages in the global field (Collins, 2005). Philosophy served to characterize the authenticity of the activity, just as characterizing what

Epic of Beowulf Essay - Qualities of a Hero :: Epic of Beowulf Essay
Beowulf:â Qualities of a Hero A legend is somebody that helps other people regardless of what the circumstance. There are numerous characteristics that a legend must gangs, for example, valiance, mental fortitude, quality, knowledge and respect. These characteristics alone are insufficient to make a saint. They should likewise be unadulterated on the most fundamental level, battle to benefit humankind and possibly battle when it is to secure the individuals and not out of retribution. Beowulf is everything a saint ought to be, yet contains a couple of characteristics that a legend ought not forces. At the point when Beowulf cruised with his men to Herot he had one objective, to free the corridor of Grendal. Beowulf was under no commitment to obliterate Grendal and never requested anything as a byproduct of his administrations. A genuine saint could never request cash or anything of significant worth. He put his life in danger to spare the individuals of Herot, who he didnââ¬â¢t even know, out of his own benevo lence Great quality has been a characteristic that has been related to saints in numerous accounts and legends. Than he saw holding tight the divider, a substantial Sword, pounded by goliaths, solid And favored with their enchantment, the best everything being equal But so monstrous that no normal man could lift... (II. 1557-1560) Beowulf had extraordinary quality that isolated him from other men. Having the option to utilize a blade that no conventional man had the option to convey gives the inclination that Beowulf is something in excess of an individual. It makes him extraordinary and makes him stand apart from every single other man. Distinction is something that makes a saint increasingly noted. Beowulfs prominence had spread everywhere throughout the world. He never let this go to his head and he never felt that he was better than every other person as a result of it. ââ¬Å"Your acclaim is all over the place, old buddy,/Reaches to unimaginable lengths, and you hold it in your heart wisely...â⬠(II.1704-1706). A saint ought not be silly or loaded with himself. Unferth stated: Youââ¬â¢re Beowulf, would you say you are the equivalent Boastful nitwit who battled a swimming Match with Brecca, both of you brave and youthful and proud, exploring the most profound Seas, taking a chance with your lives for reasons unknown But the risk? (II. 506-511) A saint ought not need to demonstrate to himself or to any other person that he is valiant, bold or fearless. On the off chance that he is unadulterated a heart and his expectations are acceptable, at that point he can be viewed as a genuine legend.

Research Paper: Role of Women in Greek Mythology In my readings I have found that ladies in antiquated Greece assumed a major job in the public arena. In contrast to numerous different social orders, ladies had the option to assume a significant job in things like religion and governmental issues and were seen as esteemed citizenry. This is something thatââ¬â¢s exceptionally phenomenal in early Western progress, as ladies were basically abused all through the majority of our history. As I proceeded with my examination on the job of ladies in Ancient Greek development, I found that huge numbers of their transcendent legendary figures are additionally resilient ladies. Ladies assumed a major job in Greek religion and they were adored no not exactly male figures. A large number of the Greek goddesses are delineated as solid, incredible yet still female figures. A couple of instances of their quality and knowledge are portrayed in the accounts of Hera, Athena, and then some. Every one of these female goddesses are viewed as key piec es of Greek folklore and have plainly had an effect on how Greeks see ladies in their general public. I accept that it is especially a result of how significant the goddesses were to Greek folklore that ladies had the option to be such key pieces of Greek society overall. As indicated by Goddesses, Whores, Wives and Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity by Sarah B. Pomeroy young ladies in old Greece were educated to be truly solid. They participated in numerous physical exercises like games alongside young men. Pomeroy likewise expresses that ladies assumed a major job in strict celebrations (Pomeroy). ââ¬Å"Spartan ladies were gotten through physical trainingâ⬠¦ They could possess their own property (as much as 40% of Spartan land in the fourth century BC was claimed by ladies). The Greek goddesses and their depiction in Greek folklore set a standard in which Greek ladies followed, to give a valiant effort to be equivalents to men and now permit themselves to feel mistreated. All in all, religion assumed an exceptionally conspicuous job in the strengthening of ladies in Ancient Greece. On account of the delightful depiction of ladies in Greek folklore, the ladies of Greece were regarded and could influence change in their general public. The accounts of Hera, Athena Odysseus, and Circe have all helped shape the structure of ladies in Greek society. Social Support Learning and Development
Question: Talk about the Social Support for Learning and Development. Answer: I was living in Saudi Arabia with my folks. I was subject to my folks for everything. I had no capacity of confidence similar to a lady; I could do anything in my nation. At the point when, I moved to Canada for my higher investigations, I bit by bit built up the nature of independence and never looked down on myself. I accepted that the nature of confidence would help me in my nursing practice later on. Musings I was glad that I had a superb chance to concentrate abroad and find a genuine new world around me. Simultaneously, I was having sympathy for the ladies in my nation that they needed to depend on their folks for everything. They didn't get an opportunity to build up the nature of confidence. I was cheerful acknowledging about the change between my old self and the upgraded one. At the point when I began remaining in Canada alone in a loft dealing with my bills and cash, I taught the characteristics of independence and versatile learning valuable in my nursing practice as a patient adjusts to ones malady and locate a positive method to live with it. Assessment In the wake of moving out of my nation and remaining alone in abroad, I built up the characteristics of independence and accepted that I could do anything all alone. My characteristics of confidence, versatile learning helped me changing my point of view towards my life and my connections. I have become all the more understanding and liberal from previously. Be that as it may, avoiding my family was difficult and felt their significance around me. Examination In the wake of moving out of the family, I examined that in my more distant family, they don't acknowledge a lady remaining outside the nation and living alone. This reasoning was an upset in my vocation. Notwithstanding, I represented myself and persuaded my folks that the choice I made is the best for my profession. I expressed gratitude toward my folks for supporting my choice and helped me become familiar with a ton while remaining abroad. I encountered that in the event that I didn't get this opportunity, I could never had the chance to build up the characteristics of confidence, versatile learning and be capable. End I generally thank my folks for supporting my choice that helped me build up the nature of confidence. I will pick any such choice again later on to build up the positive nature of independence. To be liable for our own choices and to gain from them is significant for everybody (Sarason 2013). In the wake of moving out, I think, if this open door is given to any lady in my nation, things would be better for them to accomplish their life objectives to get fruitful in their life. Activity Plan I will attempt to create and teach all the characteristics that I have gained from my experience to improved as an individual who realizes how to carry on with a hard life and to conquer the challenges well. Are You Practicing Medicine by Design or By Default - The PA Life
Default is the status quo. It is cookie cutter medicine. It is flowchart medicine. It is brainless medicine. Default medicine is continuing to prescribe Paxil when studies show it to beno more effective than a sugar pill, default is telling a diabetic patient to increase whole grains when you know it should be no grains, default is refilling that Omeprazole prescription for the 24'th time disregarding it's potential for long term ill effects. Default is Lipitor, default is the pharmaceutical based medicine of yesterday. Medicine by Design Design is using your observational skills as they were intended to be used, it is the art of medicine... The lost art of medicine. Design is structuring your treatment plans around what is best for you patients. It is taking the time to listen to their individual needs and setting aside yourprescriptionpad. It is checking in, instead of checking boxes. It is often the path of greatest resistance, which is also the path of greatest reward. It is tuning into the you that decided to go into medicine in the first place. You know, theideologue, the one who believed in health because life is finite and beautiful and people owe it tothemselvesto live healthy lives. Design in not by itself the default path. It is the intentional path. Lately, I have found myselfincreasingfrustrated by many of my patients general state of poor health, it was during a common rant, and the reading of awonderful article, that I was finally able to identify the cause of my problem: I had spent years of my life living and practicing medicine by default, and not by design. My life outside of medicine began to reflect this as well.EverytimeI paid mymortgage and my car payment, renewed my cable television contract, recited the same rote and thoughtless sayings in church. I was living life by default. Wash, rinse, dry. Enter, listen, prescribe. Work, eat, sleep... and repeat! As humans we crave routine, you will know this if you have kids. My children thrive with routine, but too much routine and you create a good factory worker, which won't take you too far now adays. Education by Default Horace Mann in 1843 created a free public school system thatmade sense for the industrial age in which he lived. The factory line was simply the most efficient way to scale production in general, and the analog factory-model classroom was the most sensible way to rapidly scale a system of schools. Factories weren't designed to support personalization. Neither were schools. Medicince by Default - See and Treat - Factory Line Medicine Around the same time, in an era of factory line education, was probably conceived a similar system of factory line medicine. Line those patients up, go down the line, write the prescription, send the bill, and pleasewhateveryou do don't call me in the morning. Medicine, just like Ford automobiles, or the school system of Horace Mann was about efficiency. Not necessarily about patient outcome or patient satsifaction. The rise of Design We are living in profound times. Maybe it is because of technology or systems within the new technology such as Facebook, but more than ever the system of 150 years ago is being challenged. We can see it in our courts, we can see it overseas, we can see it in our schools. It is time to see it again in our lives. If you find yourself frustrated in your practice try these steps: Decide to practice evidence based medicine by design. Seek integrative treatmentplans that are individualized to your patients. Extricate yourself from a factory lineclinicif that is where you work. Seek toeithercreate or work within a system that solves problems instead of kicking the can down the road. Focus on patients, not profit, and you (and your organization) will find what you seek. Read beyond medical journals to get the big picture, aim to find a solution not a band-aid. Avoid big pharm's seductive (yet selfish) recommendations. Resist the treadmill that is the default. Once you see how your unique ideas can drastically improve your patients lives you will start to trust your instincts. As a new grad this is hard, we tend to revert to default out of fear. As a PA it is even harder because we have a supervising physician. But this is just an excuse. Trust yourself, bring your art back into medicine, rekindle your passion, and be part of the movement to take back medicine from those with the biggest advertising budget and give it back to those who deserve it most. Our patients! Chose to practice medicine by design not be default! You may also like -MD Versus PA Showdown Round 1 Show Me The Money! Before you read this post I want you to take a quick survey. Essay on bipolar disorder - 502 Words
Bipolar Disorder also known as Manic Depressive Illness involves outstanding mood swings. The individual has periods of depression, and periods when they feel either unusually good or pressured and irritable. It affects 1-2% of the population. Genetics plays a significant role. About 15% of children with one bipolar parent develop the disorder. Treatments include medication, supportive psychotherapy and occasionally ECT. Medications include lithium, anticonvulsant drugs (carbamazepine (Tegretol), valproate (Depakote), gabapentin (Neurontin) and lamotrigine Lamictal), antidepressants (such as bupropion (Wellbutrin)or sertraline (Zoloft)), neuroleptics (e.g. haloperidol) and benzodiazepines (e.g. lorazepam) Treatment choices depend on theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is most often used when medication doesnââ¬â¢t work or is unsafe. Lithium is a top choice for acute mania and for maintenance in ââ¬Ëclassicââ¬â¢ bipolar disorder. Because of its narrow therapeutic range, blood levels must be monitored; also heart and kidney function (EKG, blood and urine tests). Medications such as diuretics, that block its excretion require caution. Anticonvulsants have an edge with rapid-cycling and mixed mood states (e.g. depression with racing thoughts). Except for gabapentin (Neurontin) and lamotrigine (Lamictal), they require blood tests. Carbamazepine (Tegretol) is monitored with blood levels; also CBC, platelets and liver function tests. Valproate (Depakote) requires CBC, platelet count and liver function tests; blood levels may be helpful. Lamotrigine (Lamictal) requires caution because of its association with a rare but dangerous skin rash (exfoliative dermatitis); risk can be minimized by starting with low doses and increasing gradually. Use lower doses with medications that slow lamotrigine metabolism (e.g. valproate). Gabapentin is generally safe and does not require blood tests. It is not unusual for patients to need more than one mood stabilizing medication for best results. Because bipolar disorders are generally recurrent, maintenance treatment is usually needed. This is especially true when there have been multiple episodes, a clear family history of bipolar disorder or symptom onset before age 18. Why Did Achilles Kill Hector of Troy
In Greek mythology,à Hector, the oldest child of King Priam and Hecuba, was the presumed heir to the throne of Troy. This devoted husband of Andromache and father of Astyanax was the greatest Trojan hero of the Trojan War, the main defender of Troy, and a favorite of Apollo. Hector in The Illiad As depicted in Homers The Illiad, Hector is one of the principal defenders of Troy, and he very nearly won the war for the Trojans. When,à after Achillesà temporarily deserted the Greeks, Hectorà stormed the Greek camp, wounded Odysseus and threatened to burn the Greek fleet--until Agamemnon rallied his troops and repelled the Trojans. Later, with Apollos help, Hector killed Patroclus, the best friend of Achilles, the greatest of the Greek warriors, and stole his armor, which actually belonged to Achilles. Enraged by the death of his friend, Achilles reconciled with Agamemnon and joined the other Greeks in fighting against the Trojans in order to pursue Hector. As the Greeks stormed the Trojan castle, Hector came out to meet Achilles in single combat--wearing the fateful armor ofà Achilles taken off the body of Patroclus. Achilles triumphed when he placed his spear in a small gap in the neck area of that armor.à Afterward, the Greeks desecrated Hectors corpse by dragging it around the grave of Patroclus three times. King Priam, Hectors father, then went to Achilles to beg for his sons body so he could give it a proper burial. Despite the abuse ofà theà corpse at the hands of the Greeks,à Hectors body hadà been kept intact due to the intervention of the gods.à The Illiad ends with the funeral of Hector, held during a 12-day truce granted by Achilles.à Hector in Literature and Film In 1312 CE, Jacques de Longuyon, in the romanceà Les Voeux du paon,à à included Hector as one of three pagans among the Nine Worthies--chosen as models for medieval chivalry.à In The Inferno, completed about 1314 CE, Dante placed Hector in Limbo rather than hell, since Hector was regarded by Dante as one of the truly virtuous pagans.à Inà William Shakespearesà Troilus and Cressida, written in 1609,à Hectors death comes at the end of the play, and his noble nature serves to contrast against the arrogant pride shown by other characters.à The 1956 film, Helen of Troy marked the first time Hector appears in movies, this time played by actor Harry Andrews. Andrew Jacksons Views Of Jacksonian Democracy - 1157 Words
Jacksonian Democracy describes the time from when Andrew Jackson became the seventh president of the United States in 1829 till the end of his second term in 1837 (Shi and Tindall, 319). He was the first president that didnââ¬â¢t come from a prominent colonial family. His ââ¬Å"common manâ⬠background lead him to being a popular political figure among the common people. This lead to him and his supporters forming Americaââ¬â¢s democratic party. A democracy is a system of government where the people or citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives from among themselves to form a governing body. Andrew Jackson and his supporters greatly supported the idea of democracy. They wanted the common people of America to have more power when it came toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Surprisingly, even though many Americans wanted the Indiansââ¬â¢ land, some Americans disagreed with the governmentââ¬â¢s decision over the Indians removal. This can be seen though an ac count made by John G. Burnett, ââ¬Å"I saw helpless Cherokees arrested and dragged from their homes, and driven at the bayonet point into the stockades. And in the chill of drizzling rainâ⬠¦. loaded like cattle or sheep intoâ⬠¦ wagons and started toward the west. One can never forget the sadness and solemnity of that morning,â⬠(Doc. M). This was considered the lowest point of Jacksonââ¬â¢s career (Shi and Tindall, 330). Jacksonââ¬â¢s administration completely ignored the Indiansââ¬â¢ rights as people and forced them to leave everything theyââ¬â¢ve ever known, which completely ignores basic human rights much less the basics of a democracy. Another aspect of Jacksonââ¬â¢s administration that lowered its democratic value was Jacksonââ¬â¢s actions against African Americans. When Jackson addressed the free Louisiana black men, he promised that those who fought will receive the same rewards that the white veterans received (Doc. N). While this action can be described as a democratic action, itââ¬â¢s what he didnââ¬â¢t mention that lowers the democratic value. He never moves to give free African men the right to vote or hold office, which contradicts his campaign for the ââ¬Å"common manâ⬠to gain more political influence. Left Sided Heart Failure
Question: Discuss the underlying pathophysiology (disease process) of the case that relates to your chosen key aspects, such as the cause, compensation, symptoms, consequences. You then explain HOW your medication would work to prevent or treat these aspects, and again focus on the pathophysiology (how the disease process will be prevented or treated by your medication). Answer: The new hypothetical imaginary medication One of the of the symptoms that Simon is likely to have is shortness of breath. Shortness of breath is a risk to the function of the heart that cannot be ignored at any point. In this case, it occurs when the blood in the pulmonary capillary from the left side of the heart flows back into pulmonary interstitium. This the extravasation of blood to the pulmonary interstitium reduces the ability of the pulmonary to comply to the blood flowing into it. The eventuality would be increased airway resistance. In the same breath, as this pulmonary compliance decreases and develops airway resistance, the ventilator drive increases and it leads to hypoxemia. Hypoxemia is a consequence of increased pulmonary capillary pressures and ventilation mismatch due to insufficient carbon dioxide. When the airways of the pulmonary interstitium are blocked it means that the exchange of gases in the blood shall be reduced. When little oxygenated blood shall reach the heart the heart and the brains. The eventuality would lack of enough oxygen to support breathing. Therefore, My Choco which is basically dark chocolate can help remedy shortness of breath. It has flavanols which stimulate the endothelium or the lining of arteries, to produce Nitric Oxide. This Nitric Oxide play a crucial function, it would instruct the arteries to relax, which eventually allows for blood flow and reduces blood pressure in the pulmonary capillary (ESSELSTYN, 2007). Consequently, respiration shall be normalized in the body, hence reducing shortness of breath suffering is experiencing. Liven Alkaline Coffee Simons weight is putting his heart at risk. The left ventricle can properly function to transport oxygenated blood to the heart due to the overweight of Simon. There is a high possibility that his weight is the first worsening this left-sided heart failure. It appears like his left ventricle diameter has reduced or constricted further. In this situation, a quick fix is required. With this weight, Simon experiences fatigue. Fatigue occurs when the left side of the heart fails to transport sufficient oxygenated blood to the heart, which is then circulated to other body parts like joints. Now that there is reduced oxygenated blood supply, the heart shall only supply the little oxygenated blood to a few key organs like kidney and leave legs or arms and other joints with no oxygenated blood, hence fatigue. Therefore, the liven alkaline shall be able to reduce the weight of Simon, which will ultimately dilate the left ventricle, hence increasing blood flow (ASPREY, 2014). This coffee has c affeine which burns calories to reduce the fats constricting the left ventricle. References ESSELSTYN, C. B. (2007). His children were his subject for his experiments and which he came up with the cognitive development theory. His works and studies made him famous. He mainly dealt with intellectual growth of children. Piaget believed that a childââ¬â¢s thinking, like that of an adult, was adaptive to the dynamic characteristics, facilitated by operative intelligence, and static characteristics, facilitated by figurative intelligence, of lifeââ¬â¢s reality. As he advanced in his study, Piaget realized that assimila tion and accommodation dominated interchangeably but that one process could not exist without the other. Piaget came up with a theory that described the developmental stages in children. The theory was very significant in different fields like sociology, psychology and education providing an essential part in the foundation for constructivist learning as lasting contribution to psychology. Piaget legacy has greatly influenced many other people like him in understanding the way children develop and his work is regarded with awe by psychologists all over the world. Although his theory has received a lot of criticism, his view of the mechanism with which the childrenââ¬â¢s minds work has gone a long way in helping people to understand the thought process of children development and why they cannot perform tasks for which they are not mature enough psychologically to undertake.Advertising Looking for essay on biography? ( Woodhead, 1998 53) Learning is a process that involves a change of behavior because of the experiences faced by a person in their lifetime. The way people learn is different from person to person. There are those who learn through their own experiences or from other peopleââ¬â¢s experiences but the most complex question is how an individual cautiously is aware of what is going on around him/her particularly at very young age. Children undergo informal learning which is accounted for by what they see people around them do. As a childââ¬â¢s grows up then it is able to be introduced to formal learning. The process of formal learning includes going to school hence its good to note that learning process is present both at school and family context.. ( Cohen 2002 29) How an individual learns is a process that is dictated by the kind of environment one is in. One way of learning is through thought and language. These two processes are helpful in terms of developing communicative literacy. The ability to comprehensively understand both speech and symbolic language as a way of communicating ideas and to interpret their meaning is perceived as learning. Several theories have been formulated to explain the relationship between language, thinking and learning. That is why Piaget among other scholars embarked on a research that would explain and help us understand how children developed using language and cognition. Piaget discussed the following stages: Sensorimotor st age/period (ages from birth-2yrs). Piaget described this stage mainly by observing one of his daughters, Jacqueline, while playing with her plastic duck and it fell behind a fold out of Jacquelineââ¬â¢s sight. Piaget realized that although his daughter could see where the duck had fallen, she had no interest in reaching for it unlike when it was in her sight, she seemed to forget its existence when it was not in sight.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Jean Piaget specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Piaget describes this stage as the period when infants interact with their surrounding environment using reflexes. A period where they learn to control and coordinate their bodies. He explains that the mental development of children resulted from several social dynamic factors and it happens step by step. These children should be taught through senses like frowning or laughing as this kind of teaching works more on the childââ¬â¢s sensory system. Preoperational stage (from 2-7 yrs).At this age, the child is or about to talk, the child uses symbols to represent objects since he has mental representations. Drawings, written words or spoken words are used in this stage to represent physical objects. The use of language and manipulation of symbols enables the child to be able to think in absence of the physical objects. At this age, children view things that are happening around them in their own point of view and probably cannot reason with others. An example, if a child does not want to see someone what they would mostly cover their eyes with their hands thinking that the other person will not see them as well. convincing this child otherwise would make it even more confusing because the child sees the world very differently from adults. Piaget made it clear that children inability to grasp the concept of conservation is because of their capacity to focus on one phase of a problem at a time. In this case according to these children they cannot logically understand why a short wide glass and along thin glass can hold the same amount of water this is the current physical condition of the objects. Concrete operational stage (7-12 yrs of age). This period, a child can now use and manipulate the symbols logically within the framework of actual circumstances. They are now capable of arranging and putting objects in order and understand the relation between different objects. For example if you put small balls arranged on parallel sides then scatter them around and ask a child who is in Preoperational stage and Concrete operational stage what they think about the balls in terms of numbers, the child in Preoperational stage would likely state that the scattered balls are more compared to those aligned parallel because the child will focus on the scatter while the child in Concrete operational stage would know that the balls are still the same number even though they are scattered because of their ability to conserve number, weight, mass, area, length and liquid volume.Advertising Looking for essay on biography? Bradley (1991, 89) states that Children at the age 8-10 years need to repetitively do activities like learning and revising in order to maintain efficient balance to what is happening around them Formal Operational Stage (12years-adulthood). At this stage, children have the capability to think logically, abstractly and also theoretically and they have no reason to use concrete objects to make any coherent judgment. This is regarded as the final stage of cognitive development. Children in this stage hold much broader understanding about the world and all that is around them. sensorimotor stage/period. This period marks the beginning of a childââ¬â¢s development through congenital reflexes which all infants are born with. According to Piaget this stage marks the time when a child starts to understand the world a period where a child lacks ob ject permanence given that children at this age are only aware of the objects and people who are immediately around them at that particular moment. He further subdivides this stage it in to six sub stages. From birth to six weeks: This is the time the child develops reflexes. The child may begin working on stimulus reactions usually a repetitive action. Infants have several varieties of reflexes, there are those that are permanent like blinking and gagging. Piaget discusses about three responses that include putting objects in the mouth and sucking them, following moving or interesting objects using their eyes, and grasping items when they came into contact with the palm of their hands. A very good example is when a child blows a bubble it might look interesting and so the child keeps repeating the action or when sucking a thumb or an object it may feel good and the child continues to suck it (Egan 1997, 120). From 2- to 4 months: Here a child learns to form habits through body acti ons. At this stage the child is learning how to make what they feel is interesting last longer. When infants are quite young, they function according to the principle of ââ¬Å"out of sight out of mindâ⬠thatââ¬â¢s why when an object is taken away from them they tend to think that the object has disappeared forever or tend to act as if it did not exist. From 4-9 months: Babies of this age now learn how to coordinate the relationship between vision and being able to apprehend things. These children can now intentionally grab what they want always an amusing gesture to the family and friends and they can continue doing an action over and over because it is fascinating. Example is when a child squeezes a toy duck that produces some kind of sound and then the child keeps squeezing the duck to produce that interesting sound. According to Cohen (2002 53) this stage is the most crucial in a childââ¬â¢s growth as it marks the beginning of reasoning. From 9-12 months: A child can now be said to have acquired some kind of intelligence this is according to Piaget. This stage signifies the dawn of goal orientation. The desire to achieve a set goal (Crain 1992, 56) From 12-18 months: At this stage a child has mastred the particular skill of knowing that once an object is hidden, it continues to exist. For example is when you hide a pretty ball from this child under the cushion, he knows what he has to do to get the ball back. This is the time when the child begins to think representatively as it has already learned that it exists in a separate from the world. From 18-24months: This stage marks the entry to the preoperational stage. The children now use their minds to understand the world rather than through objects and actions. Example is a child can make sense of what people are saying and they can also talk. Cognitive development, according to Piaget was much more than just having facts and ideas being put together and being stored in form of information. Mead ows (2002, 102) argues that once an individual recognizes his/her own skills having to apply the skills consciously, deliberately and flexibly becomes a major step in cognitive development. Piagetââ¬â¢s theory contradicted some beliefs from other different scholars some questioned his methodology especially the clinical method. According to Empiricists, they believe that mental mechanism in children and adults are the same and the only difference is that children are exposed to less associates. While the Nativists believe that when babies are born, they automatically have the ability to meaningfully interpret and understand what is going on in the world around them. Piagetââ¬â¢s cognitive development is criticized based on two reasons one is that he underestimated the age at which children can achieve cognitive developmental milestone like that of object performance especially the young ones because according to other scholars, children might have understood more than what Pia get thought. Piaget tried to explain that the conceptual changes in children can be compared to the changing theories in science emergencies as a result of people action towards the world, their experiences including a number of processes that we as human beings are not able to understand. In matters to do with learning, education is trifled. We are urged to understand what teachers do is merely instilling new information to children. Teaching is an indirect way of learning. If we note that children do not only take in what is said, that these are small beings who are able to interpret what they hear, see using their own knowledge and experience then its easier to understand development theory. Knowledge is experience which we acquire through interacting with the environment surrounding us this includes people and things. Many Criticsââ¬â¢ believe that by generalizing childrenââ¬â¢s capability it does not mean that every child will fit in the assumption because there those who overcome the limitations put across by Piaget cognitive development theory that children are egocentric they lack perpetual concentration and even are irreversible making the child lack the logic thinking capacity (Piaget 1992, 241). According to a work done by Sugarman (2001, 31), he points out that a 9 year old child can emerge an expert while playing chess noting that the game needs an individual to abstractly think about the moves in order to win the game while in the same game being played by a 20 year old may result to an individual seeking good strategies to plan and remember the moves in order to win the game. The first stage of cognitive development according to Piaget has over the time been criticized. According to Bruce (1987, 56), information obtained from sensory perception cannot provide objective information about the reality and also, a child cannot tell the difference between the sensory event and sensory feedback of his activity independently. In this article, the writer simply is trying to show that a child has no ability to note any positional change of an object neither the place change of an object. Butterworth argues that Piaget theory does not explain the reason there is inadequate data and doubts about his discovery. He instead chooses to side with nativist view that suggests that once a baby is born, there exists some kind of harmony between the baby and the environment the child is in. ââ¬Å"the child is neither confused by his sensory effects nor by his own activitiesâ⬠(Piaget 1967, 154). Another issue that many critics use to criticize Piaget findings, is he over looked at the possible effects of a childââ¬â¢s social and cultural group. a research conducted by Angela (2007) concluded that peer interactions among children in groups is effective in terms of child development. Psychologists today are aware that culture does affect the cognitive development of children because it determines how the child learns about the wor ld (Bruner 1983, 63). Among those criticizing Piagetââ¬â¢s works was Lev Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist, who studied human development in order to improve his own teaching. He believed that human development could only be understood from a cultural point of view and not through Piagetââ¬â¢s ideas. He argued with the fact that our mental structures could be traced back to the way we socially interacted with others (Vygotsky 1978, 96). In his writings, Lev Vygotsky assumed that cultural development of a child appeared twice; one at the social level and the other at an individual level. Vygotsky believed that cultural tools like maps rulers, symbolic items and other symbolic tools were very significant items which played important roles on cognitive development of a child emphasizing that they supported their thinking capacity. The cognitive tools are also recognized as being useful in enriching our understanding about reality by Martin (2000, 96). He used the example introduci ng quantity using roman numerals it would be very difficult to change and teach calculus or doing long division using only these numerals thatââ¬â¢s why when a number system with a zero is introduced it becomes easy to perform the mathematical queries. According to him a child can use these tools to develop themselves. ââ¬Å"Thus, childrenââ¬â¢s knowledge, ideas, attitudes, and values develop through appropriating or ââ¬Å"taking for themselvesâ⬠the ways of acting and thinking provided by their culture and by the more capable members of their groupâ⬠(Piaget 1989, 143). Piaget works have significantly helped us to understand how human beings develop cognitively. With his theory, we understand that a child has to undergo different stages to understand the world. His theory tries to explain the intellectual abilities an individual goes through during ones development. Piaget did not have the opportunity to attend formal child psychology classes but his desire to kno w about how we develop and his discovery of the cognitive theory made it possible for other activists to learn more about how children learned and how they thought. His theory explains that an individual has to change to fit in the environment one is living in. To him adaptation is important for individual development. References Angela, D. N., 2007.
